Yoshiaki Furui adds significantly to our understanding of “Bartleby” with the superb “Solitude in the Postal Age and Beyond: Melville’s Dead Letters” in his collection Modernizing Solitude: The Networked Individual in Nineteenth-Century American Literature (Alabama). Furui starts with what appears to be a narrow focus—Melville’s brief addendum referring to Bartleby’s erstwhile employment at the Dead Letter Office in Washington—and expands it into a long and fruitful discourse on the history of that office and its position both in the antebellum economy and in social relations.
